Back To The Drawing Board

When I made that pattern the other day for the mushroom pouch it gave me a boost of confidence. I've had an idea about crocheting some runes in some fashion or another so yesterday I sat down and tried to work something out. I've seen fair isle crochet and I like it very much. It lends itself nicely to making rune designs. I broke out my graph paper and pencil and fancy schmancy eraser and set to making designs.

Designing the runes themselves went fairly quickly. Then I thought I had a pretty good idea of how to work up a cowl with the designs on it. I thought I had. Yeah, no. I'm going back to the drawing board on this one. I'm almost there, but there's some step that I'm missing. Seeing as how I've never actually made anything with fair isle crochet, I do believe that I'm putting the cart before the horse on this one!

For awhile I had myself believing that if I didn't churn out a project every couple of days, then I was doing something wrong and I just must not have been working hard enough. Now I realize that experimentation and trial and error are 90% of the creative process. It sounds so stupid to put that in black and white because it seems like it should be self evident. If I needed to hear it, maybe someone else out there needs to hear it too. Creations don't always go from your mind's eye to the showcase. More often than not, they spend a good deal of time bouncing between your brain and the workbench.
